How to Feel More Confident in Front of the Camera

Do you automatically start sweating when you think about posing for photos or shooting videos? This was definitely me a few years ago!

I became a photographer so I could be behind the lens, not in front of it. But, I quickly realized the more I put myself out there, the more relatable I was to my clients who were feeling the same way. And showing up for my audience also built my self-confidence in the process!

Feeling like they couldn’t show up until they lost those extra pounds, wore their hair a certain way or had a new outfit. But none of that matters if you don’t remember why you started your business and what you’re called to.

So, here are a few ways you can build confidence when you’re on camera:

Speak positive affirmations over yourself

Speak what you want to see, not what it is right now. Instead of thinking you aren’t equipped to run a business or your lack of experience doesn’t qualify you, say “I’m a growing leader in my industry” or “I’m attracting motivated people to my community” It starts with you!

Write positive affirmations on sticky notes, index cards or create pretty graphics in Canva and print them out. Put them on a wall that you see on a daily basis or your bathroom mirror. Speak them everyday, and watch your confidence grow.

Wear an outfit you feel beautiful in

Remember how you feel when you put on a dress that flatters your figure or an outfit that someone compliments you on while you’re out and about? Recreate that feeling before you get on camera. Wear what makes you feel confident, empowered and sexy! It will radiate through you when you’re posing or speaking to the camera. Try on your outfits beforehand, so you won’t be tugging at your clothes during the shoot.

Put on your favorite lipstick

Can you believe I used to dislike wearing lipstick? I was a lip gloss kinda gal, and though lipstick was too formal. Until I found a shade I loved! Since then, I’ve ventured out to wearing red lipstick and more vibrant colors. But I prefer neutrals that are closer to my lip color or skin tone.

Now, before I even record stories on Instagram, I put on my favorite lipstick! It instantly elevates my visuals and makes me feel dressed up even when I don’t have on a full face of makeup. Try it!

Imagine the people you’re called to help

“I’m not where I want to be right now” or “What if my business doesn’t grow”? Say “I have a growing, profitable business.” or “I’m serving my audience to the best of my ability.” It’ll allow you take your eyes off yourself and focus on others.

When I’m feeling unworthy, I focus on how my gifts can help others, and it gives me the confidence to step outside of my comfort zone.

Practice, practice, practice!

If you don’t practice being in front of the camera, ultimately you won’t feel confident. Imagine riding a bike once and then not riding it again for another 6 months. You won’t feel as comfortable riding it, as you would if you practiced daily.

Practice being on camera by creating at least once per week. Whether it’s creating short form videos, selfies, talking on camera or posing, get your practice in. It’ll make creating content so much easier.

How do you build confidence before you get in front of the camera?
