What’s in my camera bag (Brand Photographer)

Life as a brand photographer it’s so much fun, challenging and there’s never a dull moment! When I first started learning photography, I researched the best camera for beginners, and a Nikon D3500 was at the top of the list. I read the reviews, and they were good so I ran to the nearest Best Buy, bought one and started snapping away at photos of my kiddos and working with brands.

Almost three years later, I’ve learned so much about gear! At first, I thought I needed all the gear a wedding photographer needs, and it felt very overwhelming. I started out with a zoom lens, and eventually invested in prime lenses, as I like being more in control of the space between me and my subject.

I shot with a 50mm 1.8 lens (and I still have it) for most of my first year in business, and it’s a great lens! I then upgraded to a D750 camera body and a 85mm 1.4 lens, and it changed everything. I was in love with almost every image I captured, and my clients were happy as well!

After working with dozens of women, and shooting in different scenarios, I realized I needed a more versatile lens. So, I read reviews about the 35mm 1.4 and how it took beautiful photos with close-ups, product shots, full body portraits and headshots, and I had to test it out! So, I rented it from Lensrentals.com (highly recommend) and I knew it was the perfect lens for me. So, I traded in my 85 and got the 35, and haven’t looked back. The 85 is a gorgeous lens, don’t get me wrong. But it was difficult to shoot in smaller spaces, which is where I find myself a lot at client shoots.

So, here’s a list of the small and mighty gear of a brand photographer:

This list is subject to change, but it’s what I’m currently loving!
